Andy from NAC talks us through a typical day at work for a cat skiing guide in the world’s powder capital!
6am: I wake up, and check the snow report. As expected there has been a 30 cm dump on Weisshorn, NAC’s private
cat resort, and I am stoked; I have a group of Americans and Australians going up today and I am really looking forward
to showing them some fresh turns in my favourite spots.

오늘 제대로된 프뤠시한 런을 보여줄수 있기를 기대한다.
7am: I head up to Weiss to do some snow tests, get the cat warmed up, and cut one trail out near the creek bed so that
people can bomb down it if they want to. It’s a fun little trail, and kind of turns into a boarder cross track, with lots of
dips and smooth curves.

8:15am: Meanwhile, Conor, the head guide, has started the hotel pickups, two from The Vale, three from Moorea Lodge,
and two more from The Freshwater. The three guys from Moorea Lodge are ex-snowboard instructors and sounded
pretty stoked when I took their booking on the phone two days earlier, so I am sure the vibe in the van is pretty lively!

8:30am: The guests are all at NAC centre in Hirafu for some
avalanche safety instruction and transceiver testing. There’s Ben, Chris, and Mitch, the three ex-snowboard instructors from Australia, Carrie and Michael from the States, and Evan and Tim, also
from Australia. Everyone is excited about the day ahead,
and our photographer Fujio takes some footage and photos
that will be the introduction to the full day of imagery available
at the end of the trip.

9:15am: We’ve taken the 15 minute drive up to Weisshorn,
and it’s time to introduce the gang to Pisten Billy, our cool
and improved cat. We hit on a few more safety points
and then it’s time to climb aboard! The first run is a warm up to assess everyone’s ability level; it is an old ski run and
always turns in to a bit of a free-for-all. Sure enough,
the gang is rearing to go and the first run of the day is accompanied by many hoots of delight, especially from Ben,
Chris and Mitch.

9:35am: We meet down the bottom where the cat is waiting for us, and pull the terrain map out of the cab to decide
where to go next. Everyone is at a pretty advanced level, so I suggest that we head over to Fujiosawa bowl.
It is named after our photographer, Fujio, (sawa means bowl in Japanese) and I can see a big grin
on his face as the cat starts heading to one of our alltime favourite spots. We take the cat up as far as it can go,
then walk up another 10 metres so we can drop in to the wide, open bowl, which is a beautiful sight in the

Everyone drops in one at a time after Conor’s lead to maximise on safety, and I can see them cutting some nice lines on the soft white powder. Carrie is a little bit nervous, as the top part of Fujiosawa is pretty steep, so I stay nearby to help her out until she finds her feet. By the time we get to the bottom part of the run, known as Ross Tree, she is in her element, and speeds off just ahead of me. I enjoy the rest of the run through the trees, and meet up with everyone at the meeting spot at the bottom of the mountain, where Ben, Mitch and Chris are doing some kind of weird dance to celebrate their exhilarating run through the fluffy powder. It is a great start to the day!

12:00pm: We have managed to fit in another two incredible runs by this time, and we are all getting hungry, so we head down to the hotel for a traditional Japanese lunch. Everyone is glad to hang up their powder-drenched outerwear to give it a chance to dry. Evan let us know ahead of time that he is a vegetarian, and his vege meal looks just as delicious as our chicken dish. Everyone finishes quickly, eager to get back in the snow. Before heading back out, we file into a room where Fujio is ready to run through the morning’s footage and photos with hot coffee and tea. He got some great shots of everyone, and seeing a replay of the morning’s glorious face shots gets everyone very amped up to get back up the mountain.

1:00pm: The wind is still mild, and I am eager to take the group to another favourite spot of mine. We head back up the top and ride down the ride a little way in the opposite direction from Fujiosawa to drop into Brizard Bowl. I think that was supposed to be ‘Blizzard Bowl’, but got lost in translation… you gotta love the Japanese. We are all loving the wide open slope, and it is a good warm up before we reach the steeper part of the run known as Seven. Everyone is having the time of their life, and I can tell that Fujio is going to get some great footage this afternoon.

3:15pm: By this time, we have had another two runs and the group is deciding where the last run should be. The vote is unanimous, and we head back up the top to ride Fujiosawa again! It’s a crowdpleaser everytime.True to Niseko form, the sky has clouded over and it starts to snow, giving the group the magical experience of carving through the deep fluffy powder amongst softly falling snowflakes.

4:30pm: We arrive back at the NAC building; tired, happy and ready for a beer! We troop upstairs to Jojo’s Café, where I, for one, am planning on investing in one of their giant burgers. Fujio sets up his equipment so we can watch the footage of the whole day in one awesome hit, and there are smiles and laughs all around. It has been another awesome day on Weisshorn, and the best part? I get to do it all again tomorrow.
